Preparing a house for an estate sale

Do

• Remove anything the family is keeping, and label anything still being decided.
• Gather paperwork for vehicles, fine art and jewelry.
• Find keys, remotes and manuals. They add value.
• Keep utilities on. Buyers test lamps and appliances.

Don't

• Don't throw anything out. Old tools, costume jewelry, vintage linens and even kitchen gadgets sell.
• Don't clean out drawers or closets. Companies find things families miss.
• Don't sell big pieces yourself first. The company needs the anchors to draw a crowd.
• Don't let neighbours pick early. It depresses the sale and the company's interest.
