What is an estate sale?

An estate sale is a sale of most or all of the contents of a home, usually run by a professional company over two or three days, open to the public, with items priced individually.

Who holds them

Families after a death, people downsizing or moving into care, and anyone relocating who can't take a full house. Despite the name, there doesn't need to be an estate in the legal sense.

How they differ from a yard sale

A yard sale is a few things on a driveway, priced to clear. An estate sale is the whole house, inside, with furniture, art, tools and kitchenware priced by someone who knows what they're worth. Serious buyers and dealers line up early.

Who runs them

Estate sale companies. They price, stage, advertise, staff the sale and clear what's left, for a commission of roughly 30 to 45 percent of sales. See the cost guide.
